The guide uses the common framework for capacity development promoted by the Tropical Agriculture Platform (TAP) to identify and strengthen key functional capacities in organizations and individuals. According to the common framework, strengthening functional capabilities allows actors to reflect and learn, collaborate, navigate complexity, and participate in political strategies and processes. Furthermore, it allows us to focus on the future and not only on solving current problems.

Background:
Countries in Africa have diverse experiences in designing and implementing pluralistic extension services systems, shaped by their unique challenges and priorities. FAO’s Innovation Office, together with its Regional Office for Africa and AFAAS, has launched a joint initiative to present and document best practices in pluralistic extension and advisory services (AEAS) systems across African countries. This initiative aims to promote knowledge-sharing and experience exchange among the states in the region. Three selected case studies will be presented during the webinar, chosen through a rigorous selection process.

Background: 

The agrifood sector faces challenges related to food security, environmental sustainability, and economic viability. With a growing global population and less than six years to achieve SDGs, innovative solutions are urgently needed to enhance productivity, sustainability, and resilience in food systems. Youth involvement is crucial for driving innovation and sustainability, but they face barriers such as limited access to resources, education, and employment opportunities. A recent ILO report shows a shift in youth employment away from agriculture towards other sectors and urban areas.
This webinar, organized by the FAO Plant Production and Protection Division (NSP) and the FAO Office of Youth and Women (OYW), aims to harness youth potential to transform agrifood systems in alignment with SDGs, particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), as well as the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31.

The course, which is certified through the online digital badge system, is now available online, free of charge, and as a global public good, through the FAO e-learning Academy

This course presents the main principles, concepts and approaches of the Tropical Agriculture Platform (TAP) Common Framework on Capacity Development for Agricultural Innovation Systems (CDAIS), developed by international experts to strengthen innovation capacities in low- and middle-income countries.

Total course length: 3 hrs and 40 minutes

This e-learning course is relevant for Agricultural Innovation System (AIS) actors including agricultural research systems, agricultural extension and advisory services, agricultural universities and research institutions, global and regional fora for agricultural research and farmer organizations. Primarily, this course targets:

  • Agriculture professionals.
  • Capacity development professionals.
  • Policy-makers involved in developing strategies and programmes on agricultural transformation.
  • Providers of innovation support services.

  • Innovation in the context of FAO’s Strategic Framework.
  • Dimensions of capacity development and how TAP is addressing capacity gaps in the tropics.
  • The importance and value of capacity needs assessments.
  • Capacity development interventions for organizations.

  • Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) in the TAP Common Framework.

Course structure:

The course consists of 6 lessons, of approximately 30-40 minutes duration each:
