RAIZ Project: Farmer Training and Feedback Workshops

The RAIZ project hosted two training and feedback workshops on agroecological practices from October 31 to November 1, 2024, involving 68 farmers from Mutoko and Murewa districts. The workshops focused on reviewing the previous agricultural season’s results, biofertilizer production, seed varieties, and agroecological principles aimed at enhancing resilience. Facilitated by Agritex officers, the sessions aimed to share field experiment outcomes, gather feedback, and plan for the 2024/25 season.

Farmers engaged in trials on organic fertilizers and conservation agriculture (CA) methods, with 51 farmers participating in experiments. Despite challenges like variable rainfall, the trials helped identify effective, sustainable soil amendments. Key lessons included the importance of mulch for moisture retention, timely planting, and detailed record-keeping.

In addition, the workshops featured training on sustainable agricultural practices, with partners like Zim Earthworm Farms and Orgfert sharing knowledge on earthworm-driven composting and organic fertilizers. The workshops also addressed challenges such as termite infestations and labor shortages, while promoting communication and collaboration among farmers through platforms like WhatsApp.

Looking ahead, the project plans to continue demonstrations and trials, emphasizing the use of intercropping and biofertilizers, and maintaining strict protocols to ensure data consistency and trial integrity.
